When browsing the web, you may receive a pop-up window in your browser, saying your machine has a virus, or has been infected. These are fake ads created by scammers. Often times it will be all red background – with big all caps text, this is an attempt to inspire urgency and convince you that you need to act fast to get rid of the virus. People will call the number on these pop-ups, and the people on the other side are the scammers. They will attempt to get remote access to your machine. Once you’ve given that away, they will attempt to convince your machine is infected, and that you need to pay up to solve the issue. They could also peruse your files, or take them for ransom. If you receive a pop-up saying you have a virus, don’t click it!
